I have a system with a evga 8600 gt 256mb ddr3 card. A friend recently upgraded and gave me his evga 9400 gt 1gb ddr2 card. Will the 9400 gt be more capable just because of more memory or would sticking with the 8600 gt be more advised just because it is ddr3?

the 9400GT would be a downgrade. the 9400GT, because of its slow GPU core, would actually fall below the 8500GT in terms of gaming performance performance. It was never intended to be a gaming card but rather an improvement over integrated graphics for multi screen set ups, DVD playback, etc.,

Thanks. I was going to stick it in my HTPC. I'll stick with the 8600 and sell the 9400. My buddy gave it to me because I was the one that installed his new one and he wouldn't really know a crap one from a good one other then price. I took it but didn't notice the "DDR2" on it till I got home.

the 8600GT is really a decent card still.
i have a xfx 8600GT factory oc'd 256mb, it got 6.5 WEI in win7 ultimate pushing 2 19" monitors on hi-res..
that's not bad (even though WEI is bad...)
didn't sell it and keep it in my extra box of parts for back-up..

lol, i have that exact same card sitting somewhere also
