Core i3-540 @ 4GHz vs Core i3-2100

Which would perform better a Core i3-540 oced to around 4GHz or a Core i3-2100?

Since the 2nd generation Intel® Core™ Processors perform around 15% to 20% faster than a comparable 1st generation Intel Core processor at the same speed. This will give the Intel Core I5 540 OC’ed to 4GHz a fairly big lead still.

well if you're gonna OC one, you can OC the other - and the 2100 will overclock to 4.0 with no problem (assuming you have a decent cooler)

so, the 2100 is what i would recommend.

chris - you failed to mention how easily the 2100 overclocks to 4.0ghz, therefor the 2100 is by far better since you can overclock it to 4.0 - 4.5 ghz, giving it that 15-20% performance boost over the 540. just sayin'.

You can't overclock the Core i3-2100 on the chipsets I might use.

@opex--How do you overclock an i3-2100? From what I've heard, you need a "K" series to get more than a 7% OC.

I've never heard of an i3-2100 OC'ing to 4.5GHz and I'd really like to hear how you do it.

From my understanding on a non-K model Intel® Core™ processor the most that you can overclock them is about 4 bins higher. So on the Intel Core I3 2100, you might be able to reach up to 3.6 GHz which would put it closer to the performance that you have gotten out of the Intel Core I3 540 at 4.0Ghz OC’ed. The question was how would an Intel Core I3 2100 stand up to an Intel Core I3 540 overclocked up to 4GHz? In that case the Intel Core I3 540 would have higher performance.

dude - but i3 540 cant use sandy bridge ...
and 2100 can .
so the motherboard on 540 will be old one like H55 or H57 or something like that ...
and 2100 can use H61 and more motherboards .

in that case what is better for me to buy?
the i3 540 with older motherboard , or i3 2100 with sandy bridge better motherboard .
which configuration will perform better in this case (if 540 is clocked ).

I am curious about my 530 OCed to 3718 MHz, which can't be pushed more than this coz of Intel DH55TC containing no option to alter voltage.
