External dvd drive not recognized windows xp

I am having the same problem. The drive is a LG. When I plug it in it finds new hardware but says it is USB Mass Storage Device then tells me there was a problem and device may mot perform correctly. I checked the device manager and under usb devices it shows it as a problem usb. I have uninstalled numerous times and it does the same thing each time. The old drive is detected as a DVD drive. This tells me the external connector board is working. Whats with the LG drive.

What drive and OS are they? I'm thinking that the LG might not have drivers for your OS and you'd need to manually install them.
