Docking station to boost laptop rendering power?

I'm in the process of updating my video editing & 2D/3D Animation hardware setup (Maya, After Effects, Photoshop).
I will not be using this for gaming at all. I have about $2000 to work with.
I'd really like to be able to have a mobile workstation that can dock for additional rendering power and screen space. Is that a realistic option? Boxx Makes that renderPro device which in itself blows my budget. Is there a cheaper alternative?

I was looking at the Dell M4500 laptop with a i5 processor (to be upgraded to an i7) & Quadro FX 880M.

Is this idea worth pursuing, or should I just go with a desktop?

desktops are always less expensive....

I would only ponder a laptop if you simply must have only have one computer to take back and forth....(work/home)

Even then, it is cheaper to have two desktops.

Or buy a working station for home/office and another for showcasing your work. The 2nd one doesn't need to be equal in terms of computing power. I'm pretty sure your apps let you output your work to other file format like a video or whatever. Even a cheap laptop can showcase this.

Thanks for the advice. I think you two are right. I'm going with a desktop.
