Laptop won't recognize a disc in the drive. Tried music, data, pix, games, movies. It won't write data either. When a disc is inserted the head(s) seem to move but it does not spin up. With over 1000 hrs on the drive is this something I can/should replace myself? No stranger to tools or technology but have only replaced a laptop screen before. Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

Replacing a drive from a laptop is way more easier then a screen, most of the time just one screw and take it out.
However i would first try to clean the head of the drive first using one of those ear cleaning sticks (am dutch, don't know the exact English name) and some pure alcohol.
After applying some alcohol on one side of the stick (not too much) just brush it gently along the glass side of head and after that clean it off with the other dry side and try again.
