I have a problem that just occured today. When i turned on the computer today the card was maing a loud noisem, so i opened it up and checked my 5770. The fan wasnt moving. I decided to take out the video card for a closer inspection and tried moving the fan myself. It was wobbly and then the fan just came off. I have no idea what to do? DO i get a new card seeing as this card wil never work now, or do i get an after cooler? Can the fan be replaced or can i perhaps put teh fan back on? Any help would be awesome. I dont want to go and buy a new video card espically right now since i was saving my money for the newer cards that are coming out mid december!

What type and brand of card is it ? --- chances are the card is still fine (since they have protections built in that will shut down the card before it gets hot enough to cause damage to itself) -- so you should be fine with either reinstalling the fan or getting an aftermarket cooling kit for it ( normally there are a few very small screws holding the fan onto the card so chances are they just came off and can be replaced (if you have a set of precision screwdrivers and can find the screws) -- If you look closely at the fan you should be able to see where the screws go that hold the fan onto the heatsink (it will vary depending on the model of card)

Its the ATI Radeon brand. I actually tried looking for screws but i couldnt find anywhere on the fan. Seems like it was attached by glue or something like that. But if its fixable and i dont have to get another card then that indeed is a good thing

Did the fan break off or did the screws come loose? Also, do you have onboard video to hold you over for one more week? Either option (RMA or buying aftermarket) would take at least a week I'd guess. Could you take a picture of the part? The new cards should be out soon if you could go without the computer for a little while (about a week).

nope my board is ASUS Rampage 3 Formula that doesnt come with an onboard video unfort. The screws i guess came off, fan is still in one piece its just not connected to my video card atm. I can post a pic. Give me few minutes

Not sure how those are attached but on my sapphire with the egg shaped cooler there are 3 small screws that hold the fan in place on the heatsink. I know you can remove the entire heatsing and shroud by removing the screws on the bracket at the back of the card and then removing the entire unit to add an aftermarket heatsink\fan so if you can't figur out how to reattach the fan that is always an option.

Hmm, the pics are a little blurry, but it looks like the center shaft broke. Does that look possible when you look at it (such as rough surfaces)?

I assume pushing it back into place doesn't help, right? It may also be a design without a center shaft, though a center shaft is the way I normally see that type of fan made.

well when i put the fan on it will stay on but its really wobbly and when i put it back in my computer and tried running it the fan doesnt move at all. Its really funny though, how the heck could the fan break for no reason. Oh and sorry about the blurry pics, used my ipod to take em lol. As for the center shaft no it doesnt look broken, when i look at the fan seems like it was attached with some sort of glue that dried out now?

In looking at the pics looks like the plastic shaft broke off and the top part is still attached to the fan or you might be right that it was glued on - IS there a screw attached to the center of the fan under the label ? -- might be easiest to just replace the heatsink\cooler with an aftermarket one instead of trying to replace the fan as it looks to be problematic getting it attached and centered so it will not wobble.

If the shaft isn't broken then the plastic retainer inside the fan motor likely is. I broke one of these on a case fan and I can still use it (because the fan is vertical). Unfortunately, graphics cards have upside down fans, so if this component (or the bearing or bushing) fails, then you probably have to replace the fan. You *might* be able to use a spare/cheap case fan to tide you over until you can get a new card, or you can RMA this one.

RMA would take longer then one week though, but i guess if there is nothing else i can do i really dont have much choice. I wish i could know though how the heck the fan came out for no reason. I actually did use my compressed gas duster before installing the fan on teh computer. DO you think that could have had some part in this all?

probably not ! -- it is most likely just a case of the fan not being installed properly to begin with (or not completely balanced and the wobble eventually made it come loose.)
