The laptop being upgraded is a Micron Transport XKE 233. It came with
32MB on-board memory, and two empty banks. The memory installed is '4M
x 64 (4 chip) (32 MB) SODIMMs'. The memory type is 144-pin EDOs. The
spec. says this model accepts 32MB or 64MB chips. So I bought a 64MB
chip, http://www.kahlon.com/itemdetailpg.asp?itemid=18442, intend to
bring the total to 96MB. When the 64MB is put in, the BIOS report a
total of 96MB, no warning beeps. However the operating systems (WINNT
4.0 or Windows 2000 Pro will hang) in the loading phase. The problem
goes away with the chip removed. It happens for either empty bank. I
will find out whether the 64MB is defective, or the leads are dirty,
but I wonder whether the size of the on-board memory is limiting the
type of additional memory chips I may use.
What got me suspicious is the following in the manual:
"The following table shows some of the possible
RAM configurations when you upgrade with optional RAM
modules.'
32MB onboard + one 32MB module = 64MB
32MB onboard + two 32MB modules = 96MB
64MB onboard + one 32MB module = 96MB
64MB onboard + two 32MB modules = 128MB
64MB onboard + one 64MB modules = 128MB
64MB onboard + two 64MB modules = 192MB

There is not an example of on-board 32 mixed with 64 module(s).
On the other hand, there is 62 onboard w/ 32 module(s) configuration.
Is it possible by some strange design, the RAMs in the banks can not
exceed the onboard?
Thanks!

Get ahold of a program called Memtest (Google it). You can make a
boot disk and boot into it, then run Memtest on your system. It will
tell you if your memory first of all is any good or not - just let it
run for a bit. If it doesn't report memory problems, then consider
Windows...
