So, with Xmas coming up I've been thinking about what GPU I wanna get and I've pretty much narrowed it down to 2. I play at 1680x 1200 and I want to be able to handle almost all games maxxed, maybe for the years to come as well. So, basically, which one of the two is better? GTX 570, or Radeon 6870? Also, I have a stock i3-540 ( which I will OC so it won't be that much of a bottleneck) and 4GB of RAM.

well.. to answer your question.. the GTX 570 is significantly better than the R6870... but it also costs $110 more on average... so it's in a different class of course

for 1680 resolution - the 6870 should more than suffice... and save you over $100... and also require a lower powered PSU

to get a more final answer though - you'll need to provide your current system specs... as well as your budget for the card...

LMAO You're suggesting against the GTX 470 simply because it's not the absolute latest? The 470 and the 6870 trade blows performance wise in most benchmarks. So they're just about equals (obviously each wins in certain game titles). Telling the OP to ignore the GTX 470 simply because the 6870 is newer is ignorant.

Now, the ATI 6870 probably runs cooler and quieter, and uses less power. That would be a reason to recommend it over the GTX 470. There would then be something real behind the suggestion.

EVGA Superclocked GTX 470 for $249.99 - $20 MIR = $229.99

At your resolution (which is odd by the way) of 1680x1200 either the GTX 470 or ATI 6870 would be more than sufficient.

at first i read it as 1600x1200 and was like... wait... is he using a crt? >_<

yea 6850 would be fine for your needs a 570 would be a better card but really you'll max everythign out with the 6870 so really unless you plan on getting the 570 for a bit of future proofing then the 6870 woudl be sufficient (even the 6870 has some built in future proofing just not quite as much )

Yes, the GTX 470 & ATI 6870 are definitely more than needed unless he's doing 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. So the OP CAN save money by going with a lesser card.

The GTX 460 or ATI 6850 are probably more in line with what's actually needed.

"The 470 is last years card - dont waste money on it "

cut him some slack guys... i bet his purse and high heels aren't last season either ;)

but ye what matters is performance... if i have a 68 camaro with a blown 454 and you try to race me in a brand new toyota prius you're not gonna do much in a race against me ... you're just gonna be more efficient

LOL I dunno, the 2010 Camaro might not even beat a blown 454 in a 68. Hehehe :kaola:

that actually would make an even better reference as even if the new camaro is faster than the 68 that doesn't make the blown 68 slow..

but in the grand scheme of motorised vehicles give me a bike for speed ;) i'd put money on my ducati against 99% of cars out there :D
