ATI Graphics Card for Second Life?

Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards ATI Graphics Card for Second Life?

Word :    Username :

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop and would like something that will play Second Life well, along with being able to pull "shadows" up inworld, as it crashes the game on my current laptop.

I am looking at the HP ENVY 14:

Processor:
Intel® Core™ i5-460M Processor 2.53GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.80GHz
Operating System:
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Memory (RAM):
4GB DDR3
Hard Drive:
640GB (7200RPM) SATA with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
Video Graphics:
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 switchable graphics with 1024MB DDR3 with up to 2714MB total graphics memory

Was wondering if this would be a good enough laptop for the program?

As laptops go, that's quite powerful! I don't know the system requirements for SL, but looking at the specs of the proposed machine I'd say they were good enough to run most games with extra details enabled!

my mom plays that doll game too.....

she runs it happily with pd 840 + HT(2 core 4 thread) and 8600gts oc(850core/2210shader/1300ram). to me anything above that 8600gts is far enough to handle that doll game...even the card is mobile 5670 it's still as good as 4670 oc which is better than 8600gts....and i5 460m is far above her pd 840 ht as well so you are good to go!

I'm not going to judge you for what you like to do in your free time. Time enjoyed is time well spent. However if the most taxing thing you plan to do is play Second Life and money is a issue for you then I advise getting a cheaper laptop as that is overkill.

Shadows are very common in many 3D games, but it is still an unsupported feature in Second Life, and it is not for general use. You still can activate it through develop menu by pressing CTrl + Alt + D all togehter.

I made a film in Second Life with an ATI Graphics Card playing with some shadows, see below.
