Please help with a < $1,000 Gaming Build

I have decided to wait until I can build a system based on the Intel i5 2500k was available, but am trying to get some ideas together while I wait. I will mainly using this for playing MMOs, such as Rift and the new Star Wars one.

I was originally looking at the Antec 300 and Antec 900, but am now trying to decide between the Coolermaster HAF 912, HAF 922, and CM690 II Advanced.

ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM

Does anyone have a recommendation for the best motherboard, for the price, for the 2500k (P67).

I have decided to go with the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB over the WD Caviar Black.

I was looking for a modular power supply to power this and one video card, but wasn't really sure how much I needed here.

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL

I also wasn't sure what the best video card for the money was. I'm not partial to either NVIDIA or ATI.

More about please gaming build
  1. Put the wrong ram on there, was meaning to go with G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1333 8gb (2x4gb).
  2. I suggest waiting for SB in my opinion. All my recommendations are in my siggy for the 1000$ build.

Just swap out the i5 750 for the 2500K and for the motherboard put in the Asrock Extreme4 P67. w/ Bios revision the 2500K gets up to 5.1ghz w/ the Extreme4. I would suggest waiting though, and it seems like you are until the fix.
  3. I agree that now is a great time to wait and see if you're able.

First, Sandy Bridge promises to bring a lot of changes to the price/performance landscape.
Second, Star Wars: The Old Republic isn't coming out until probably May at the earliest. A lot of RPG gamers will be looking to upgrade around that time. Then not long after that we'll start to see the effects of Battlefield 3 bringing the heat back to PC shooters with the return of bigger maps and real vehicle combat etc.

When you put together a new Intel architecture, plus a big RPG release, plus a big combat/shooter release it's easy to see that there will be a LOT of hardware sold in the next 6-8 months. That's going to drive prices down on a lot of stuff that's at the high-end right now.
Plus you know a lot of people have to have the latest and greatest, no matter how much of their parents money it costs, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some really pretty sweet used video cards showing up on popular auction sites in a few months. Cards that would breeze along w/ highest settings on any MMORPG.
Scoring a deal like that could really make your money go farther.
  4. Thanks for the replies. I was definitely waiting on the 2500k. Aznshinobi, you had replied to an earlier post of mine, but I forgot to bookmark the site in your sig, and I couldn't find the original post, so thanks again. Once they are available, I will be using your guide for my build.
  5. Case - $70 - Antec 300 Illusion
    PSU - $100 - XFX Black Edition 750
    MoBo - $390 - ASUS P8P67 Pro
CPU - incl above - Intel Core i5-2500K
    RAM - $110 - (2 x 4GB) Corsair CAS 9
    GFX - $250 - Asus GTX 560
    HD - $55 - Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 rpm
    DVD Writer - $22 - Asus 24X DRW-24B3L w/ LS

Total $997 last time I checked
  6. O.O Why get cougar point if in the long run they'll give him that performance degradation.
