Tim why did you only increase Barbitic mine hit damage?

Laser and grav mines still do the same damage.
I do not know about web mines.
The RCS for example can only ever lay laser mines
never any other type. This change makes them weaker.
Is there a reason other than a few player
constantly complain about the Robots?

It seems to me that Tim is hung up on one race
The Robots.

Almost every change is about is it fair for the Robots?

What about all of the other races that are constantly
getting power reductions in the name of Robot balance?

There has been talk about how mines slow down the game.
And that was before we could easily replenish mine fields.
Now that Barbitic mines are stronger this will have the
effect of further slowing the game.

Is that good or bad? I guess it depends on if you are
a Robot player or not?

Really it isnt good or bad. I suppose If youre a robot player, and
have to depend on minefield effectiveness because of slow, vulnerable
expensive ships, slow weak fighters and have been relegated to
passivly damaging enemies through slow acting special gizmos as the
most effective means of offense, if enemies are close enough, its a
concern. Power reductions for robot balance, how about just plain
balance. Were right back to it again. 10000 doesnt = 1000000, so that
had to be fixed didnt it.

Tim set the bots up on minefields, If he set the default at 40 many
hosts would set it back to 15! I set it at 40 for games I host,
because minefields are too easy. I know you know that, which is why
they are just a big waste of time to us. I want the robots changed to
be more conventional.

You know the funniest thing is, if the birds didnt have a cloaking
super weapon ship and Tim decided to add it after the fact, people on
this board would just go freakin ape! Tim screwed up the robots at
conception period! You cannot win with fixed fortifications PERIOD!
Its a historical lesson, widely accepted by any with the slightest
grasp. So why did he do it? I couldnt say. He tried to shoe horn
them into that paradigm with many incentives to stay put operate in
minefields, dont go anywhere. Then people said, "well were really not
hurting the enemy until hes attacking us." Good results or bad on
defense, its not the best way to win having to let the enemy punch
himself out on you. So Tim incresed nests, and that just freakin killed
most games, because people hate freakin hyp and want instant
gratification, so they set themselves 4-500ly away from each other. So
he graduated it, placing them roughly back where they started.

GZ was too weak on big targets, so tim fixed that one, but all the
while people were bitching, The essense of which was "jeez! why should
they be able to build 300000mc worth of base buldings to destroy my
30000 dollars ships, sometimes. Now its a bit more difficult to destroy
them quickly. I mean we'll still win, but now it takes more focus and I
have other concerns."

Its still a bad solution and an illadvised base building, but its what
you got. Fixed forts for bots should be marginalized for a more
conventional attack ability. Maybe then youll see less minefields.

Im paying keen attention to it because bots and CoM are my races of
interest. Laser, gravs and certainly web, hit alot. Barbs dont and
wont because NO ONE would tolerate the increase in hit odds. So he
increased the damage. He wouldnt acept the suggestions that minefield
max safe speeds should be 1/3 speed of the slowest engine for all and
half that for webs.

Perhaps detonated barb fields should do even more damage, this way the
incentive would be to blow them more.

If that's his focus at the moment so be it. There are other things that need
attention but the robots were one of them. Anything that enhances game play
is welcomed. And if in the course of tiem we try something that doesn't work
out well... then, oh well, that's to be exxpeccted. It's beta.

Exactly. And it's frustratingly sad to me that people do so. It's like some
people enitrely miss the point of all of this. It's a game, and it's in open
beta test.

You have to see, the increased barb mine hit damage, together with the
host changes allowing all races to sweep cloaked barb mines.
As long as only the hitting damage is increased, and not the damage
from exploding barb mines, I do not see anything wrong with it.

And if we see these changes together I do not see that the RCS (or
Aczanny)
got weakened in comparison to other races.

I think the idea behind increasing barb mine hit damage is that in many
cases the equivalent grav mine field would in pratice do more damage
than barb mines. (Probability of hiting each grav mine so much higher)

Also you can detonate overlaped Laser, Grav & Web mines but you cannot
detonate overlapped Barb mines. The first Barb mine will destroy all
the others.

Personally as Borg, I would lay many more Grav mines than Barb ones.

I was also a fan of multi-point different size fields of same type
mining.

One thre layer pattern:

5K grav
3K barb
1K grav

And a mine detonation trap could have multiple 5K gravs in addition to
the 3K barba and 1K gravs, with several but not detonaton of gravs in
the area. Have your cake (damage that hyp ship) and eat it too (ship
still in a grav mine field)
