Hello guys, I recently bought a new PC from eBay, the specs are: AMD athlon ii x4 640 (3ghz), 4GB ddr3 ram 1333MHz, nvidia 7025 onboard graphics, 400w PSU (dont know brand name only the power) and Windows 7 64 bit. I mainly play WOW, on a 17 inch screen so resolution will be 1280x1024. I just want to know what is the best graphics card i can buy with a budget around £100 and on my PSU as I know a 8400gs even OC isnt good enough to play WOW on high settings or ultra. My motherboard is Bio star N68S3 , http://WWW.biostar.com.tw/app/es/mb/content.php?S_ID=50...

Without upgrading PSU, you can get HD5670:

Dual slot version
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Single slot version.
That card is much faster than your 8400GS.

Thanks for the quick replies, the chipset is nforce 630a , cheesesubs.wa1, yeah I was looking at that card should i go for the 1gb version? beacuse i think it has some specs which are better than the 512mb version
even if it's 630a it's stil going to be the same result. all 6 series only support pcie 1.0 and not support 1.1 that allow to run 2.x card as backward compatibility mode. 1.0 does not allow 2.0 card to run on it and only few chipset such as g31/35/p35 and amd 690x support pcie 1.1 and capable to install newer card. for short if you have pcie 1.1 board then you can install either 1.0/1.1 or 2.0/2.1 card but if your board only support 1.0 then you can only get 1.0 card which 5670 simply isn't an option as you will encounter two problem, 1.) 5 series is pcie 2.1 and having known issue that don't run well on older pcie slot. it was said to be able to run on older pcie but the bottom line is pcie 1.1 and older one like 945gc/nforce 6 with pcie 1.0 will not run it. 2.) you are running a nvidia chipset and it may occur error as hardware/driver conflict with the card itself. your option had been limit to 7 and 8 series by the older board itself. get a 8 series card or get a 5670 but also change the board.

because i really dont want to get a new motherboard and install my existing hardware on it

2.0 cards are backward compatible with 1.0 or 1.1 pcie slot motherboard...The only issue is with 2.1 cards.
And all my links above are 2.0 version.
ooh good to know
. what do you think of http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sapphire-ATI-5670-512MB-DX-11-PCI...Its a bargain, but is it the dual slot you were on about?

^ yeh your right wa1 2.0 is backward compatible
, if It's not to late might I suggest getting the 5770, it will work with your PSU and you will be able to game at high settings at your current resolution, they are getting a lot cheaper now here is one for £101

Can't find anything on the net about that PSU.Then stay with HD5670.

Yep you are right, If it's not a brand name PSU It's not worth risking it, I used to run a HD5670 on a 1440 x 900 monitor and it's not bad at all, could play wow at 50fps on high with lowish shadows (won't be as much now because of graphics updates in cataclysm) but from looking at reviews you can get a lot more fps by enabling dx 11 which that card has.

both 2.0 and 2.1 can only support back to 1.1 slot. not 1.0a or older 1.0
but it's worth to try because some board may actually work but some will not.

well it'll use up to three cores, however if you use an intel chip with hyperthreading it will only use 2 cores thinking the hyper thread is a core. but yes you can script to utilise more than 3 mores ... i used to do it but i didn't see any diffrence in my athlon II x4 (3.1 Ghz) so i turned it off, figure i'll leave one core idle/ for background use
