Hey everyone! My current specs are below. I'm looking to upgrade a bit but not sure 100%. I dont play a whole lot of games on the pc other than MMOs. I'm currently awaiting The Old Republic so I'm thinking I might upgrade the video card. I was also thinking of swapping out my hdd for a 6gb sata or ssd? Im not sure if ssd is what I want yet? Life expectancy? I was also thinking of doing 8 gb of ram instead of 4 gb. I'll be running vmware and such with other operating systems for my classes and doing some FLAC and other things. What do you guys think? Can I still get buy on this processor? I built this computer maybe mid/late 2009.
ASUS M4A79T Deluxe AM3
Antec CP-850 850W Continuous Power CPX
CORSAIR XMS3 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3
MSI R4890-T2D1G OC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
For your use it is not a bad computer as is. The 955BE has some free performance left in it (overclock) Hd4890 is still a powerful mid range card.
You would benefit from the ram upgrade and a SSD for your OS since your board does not support SATA 6GB.
Right now, SATA 6Gbps is all but useless unless you use the Crucial C300 or plan on using the next gen SSD that are not out yet; getting a HDD that runs at 6Gbps won't give you any benefit over a 3Gbps one.
For gaming, I think your video card is also good enough for most games unless you play at very high resolutions, most MMOs aren't that GPU intensive (to reach a broader market).
If you plan on using VMs, than yes another set of RAM could be interesting, but remember you might have some timing/voltage adjustment to make when going with 4 DIMMs.
I am still at a loss as to why you would want to upgrade; I myself am currently planning to upgrade to the 955BE and a new motherboard and such (over my current LGA775) so the only real benefit I can see is a better graphics card. Maybe an ATI 6870 or 6950?
I totally didn't think about checking to see if my motherboard supported 6gb sata. I guess just some more ram and a newer video card and it'll be good to go. I thought about doing a total rebuild on something that would last me another 4 years but I don't know if its worth it at the moment. Maybe it could be and maybe it wouldn't be that expensive but I haven't look into much yet.
