I am not sure if its this mouse as it has happened on another computer that was also running windows 7, or the OS. It is a simple Microsoft wheel mouse that is PS/2 compatible(says so on bottom of mouse). It can be corrected by unplugging and re-plugging the mouse. Its clicks work, but the mouse will move in short jerks as I move it all over the place.

Or maybe I should get a different type of mouse.

This will most probably be a power management issue.
Try the following:

Locate on witch usb hub the mouse is connected on.
Disable any power management options on that hub.
Try again.

Good luck !

Either that or try adjusting the options under the power plan menu. You can change what happens in sleep mode, etc..., which should in theory fix the issue. Let us know if none of these options work.

I had something similar. Turns out it was the mouse's driver. Try updating it.
