Helping a friend with their PC and Kodak Easyshare.

He found a few pictures in an album (where Kodak Easyshare software
displayed a thumbnail of the pics) he wanted to save to CD. However
when he clicked on them he received an error message stating the file
was not found. The location specified was a zip file located somewhere
in a Temp directory under Local Settings (in XP).

Question 1
***His question is how they could be deleted but show the thumbnail.
Also why it pointed to a temp directory under Local Settings, Temp
directory??

My Thinking:
I was thinking that somehow he deleted them. I also said to him that
Kodak Easyshare must keep a database of pictures (thumbnails) where you
can right click on the properties and get the file name and size of the
picture----BUT----that does not mean the file is still there.

Thoughts/Comments?

_________

Question 2
Also, one thing I wondered is that while you can create an ALBUM name
in Kodak Easyshare, it does not seem to use that name in the XP File
system. I at least could not find it in a search or Explore of
directories.

Is this right?

Thanks so much
Patty

That is correct.

Very likely. This is a catalog, not a folder, even though it may appear
that way in use.

I've never used the easy share program before, but if he has run any disk
utilities lately, bets are that what ever was in that
c:\docsandsettings\localsetting\applicationdata\microsoft\tmep or whatever
the path was, is now history.

your train of thought on the thumbs makes sense to me though.

Jot down the filename of one of the thumbnailed images, and do an
Explorer search for that filename. If the folder that held the files
has been moved or renamed, you'll get those stupid error messages. It
doesn't necessarily mean that the actual image file (s) has been deleted.

I've pretty much given up on Easyshare software for everything except
the actual transfer of the image files from the camera.

Thanks all.
Yes I did do a search for the picture filename and it was gone. Makes
no sense why Easyshare would store any pics in a temp directory.
Thanks again

Greetings Patty,

Sorry I did not see this till today.

It appears you are using a Picture CD or a CD with pictures. You are also
experiencing the following condition; EASYSHARE Software looking in the hard
drive location that your pictures were located when you added them to your
EASYSHARE Software collection, and not being able to find them. Rather, your
pictures have been moved from their original default location, or have been
renamed or deleted.

Since EASYSHARE Software is a cataloging program, it needs to know the
location of the picture files on your hard drive in order to display them.
You should not delete these images directly from your hard drive but instead
delete them using the EASYSHARE Software.

To restore your pictures, you need to remove the thumbnail pictures that
display black screens in your collection when selected for viewing, then
adding returning the pictures back into your collection. You can do this by
selecting the EASYSHARE Software Add Pictures icon and navigating to the new
locations of your pictures, then adding them back into your collection.

To remove the thumbnail picture(s):
Right click on the thumbnail picture and select remove from collection. This
will remove the thumbnail picture only. To remove more than one picture,
select all pictures at one time using the 'Select All' icon from the top
tool bar, then go to File / Delete from the main menu bar. This will delete
all thumbnails selected.

To restore deleted picture(s):
Place the CD or Kodak Picture CD with the images you wish to restore into
the CDROM drive. Allow the software to re-transfer the images to you
collection.

To restore renamed or relocated pictures:
Select the Add Pictures icon in the EASYSHARE Software, navigate to and
select the directory location where your pictures are located and add the
pictures back into your collection. If the pictures have been renamed or
relocated to a CD, set the CD into the CD Rom drive and the software will
offer to automatically re-transfer the images to your collection. Be sure
to have the CD of the Kodak Picture CD in the CD drive.

As to the album names, the reason they are different is that the names work
only in EASYSHARE Software. Kodak does not change the name of the images
etc. but only works within itself (as a cataloging program) to give you this
special feature.

Let me know if this works for you. If not I will follow through and get your
software working correctly.

Thanks. Unfortuantely the programs are gone for good. They were taken
off the memory card some time ago. My dumb mistake for deleting them.

Thanks

Hello All,
I help people with computer problems and I came across an odd one today regarding Kodak Easyshare software (ver 3.1.0.66). Photos are disappearing. Similar to the problem Patty's friend had.
You open the program and see thumbnails with pictures in them, you click on the picture and an error message comes up stating the link was not there or something similar, didn't write it down. Then I right click on it and check out properties, get the file name and do a search. Search comes up empty. So that tells me it has been deleted or renamed. If it has been renamed I suppose I could do a search for all .jpg files and open every one but the client has 5 GB of pics.
Here is the kicker; his son that lives in another state has the exact same problem, losing pictures with the Easyshare program. I can see possibly one guy having this problem, but the guy’s own son!! We are talking statistical impossibility unless the software is bad.
So if these pictures are getting renamed by some bug in Easyshare, what would they be getting renamed as if they are still on his computer?
Kind Regards,
Fleetwood

I have a similar problem. My Kodak shareware has about 1000 photos in it over half of them can not be opened, the thumbnail is there for all of them but the ones that don't open I get a message that the file name has been changed or moved. I never did anything (knowingly) to move them. I can't tell you the hours I have spent looking for them, I have done all the above suggestions, and tried different versions of software with no success. I have called Kodak for support, very disappointed with their lack of support. If someone could answer the question about the thumbnail being present but not accessible, I all ears. My thought is if the immage is in a thumbnail, why cant it be opened. PG

Same thing happened to me today! I am just sick about it. Two adorable pics of my daughter gone forever :( The thumbnail was there, and I clicked edit picture to turn in 90 degrees. Then I hit save and the pic was suddenly gone with a message saying the file existed but may be damaged. I closed the pic and opened it back up again, and now it says file has been renamed, moved or deleted. But I can still see the pic in the thumbnail. Searched the hard drive for the file name, but nothing came up. Of course if the file has been renamed, I have no way of knowing what to, and thus no way to search for it. I'd love some suggestions of other things to try.

P.S. I have recently started backing up all my kodak pics on CD so that these are the only two pics I ever lose. I don't trust Kodak Easy Share any longer :(

I found them! I searched every JPG file I had and found them. They were located in C:\Program Files\Kodak Easy Share Software\originals . I hope maybe some of you are able to find yours there as well. The originals are named different than the ones in "My Collection" when you open your Kodak Easy Share. I just hit Add Pictures and was able to add them from there and rename them to the name they were supposed to have been when they were lost.

Anyway, I hope this helps someone :)

Hello:

My sister uses Kodak easy Share (6.2.2). While on the phone with her today she aksed me how should could backup her pics to an external drive. I have never used EasyShare before...so I told her to copy the "Kodak Pitcures" directory from her hard drive to the external USB drive. She found the "Kodak Pictures" directory under the "Shared Documents->Shared Pictures" directory and copied the "kodak pictures" directory. Then pasted it in a folder on her external drive.
All seemed to copy ok.

But when she brought up the EasyShare application, it could not find the pictures and had red Xs on her pictures in the viewer. When she checked for the Kodak Pitcures directory under Shared Documents->Shared Pictures...it was not there.

So it seems more like a move then a copy. But she swears that she did copy and then paste. Did this happen becuase of the EasyShare software or is it something associated with Windows (she has XP Media Center Edition).

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Thanks in advance.

Kodak Easyshare pictures are stored under Documents and Settings/All Users/ Shared Documents/Shared Pictures/Kodak Pictures.

Hope that helps.

I have a similar problem. I removed my Kodak Easyshare software and now cannot get into my albums. As others, my pictures are lost. I went to the above directory and found the photos but they wouldn't come up. If I bought another Kodak Easy Share camera, would my photos be retrieved? I have three broken cameras here; this camera does not last but the software is easy to use. I failed to back my photos up on a CD. Any ideas?

This worked! I found some pictures. Now I just wish I could find the rest. :)
