I tried to swap out my celeron 440 for a used core 2 duo e6400 bought off ebay and it didn't POST.

It has:
-ECS 945GCT-M (V3.0)
-2X)1GB Hynix PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2-667 240 pin
-Eagle 550W PSU

The fans and harddrives were getting power. I put the old CPU back in it and it POSTed fine. I would like to get the core 2 duo working.

Anybody know what could be wrong? Did I get a dead processor? The e6400 got hot. Does that mean it is recieving power? Is it getting too hot? Do I need to apply new gel?

Thanks,
Stefan

hrmm yes its possible you got a dead cpu , but its also possible that you need to update your Motherboards bios the jump from a 400 to an e6400 is quite a bit

So i would suggest updating you Bios ( how to is here on your Motherboards site)
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product/Product_Detail.aspx?DetailID=830&CategoryID=1&MenuID=16&LanID=0

read the bit in the grey box

I had a look on the ECS website to check if the board supported the cpu and it does
I would suggest giving it another go and making sure you have it seated correctly and the heat sink is fitted correctly.

The e6400 is still not working. I don't know what to try next.

I used the 5/22/07 version of award bios that ecs offered, followed the winflash instructions but still nothing shows up on the screen when I turn it on. Then cpu fan runs a lot slower with the e6400 in it too.

Do I need to return it?

I put the 440 in again and verified the bios version in cpu-z. This newer bios doesn't allow me to control the cpu fan speed. It is just running full blast all the time.

Is it worth trying a new heat sink and cpu fan with the e6400?

What do you think?

Thanks for all the advise.
