Hi,
I have the Bogen/Manfrotto 055PROB (3021BPRO) together with the 3047
head.
This beast is to heavy to carry around.
Is there a similar constellation but lighter? It should provide the same
height and should have a level(s) on the head.
It doesn't have to be Manfrotto but similar (good) quality.
A ball head with a level would be fine too.
The camera is a 10D with a 70-240 lens.
What do you use and are you happy with it?
Thank you for any suggestions.

I am currently looking at the Manfrotto NeoTec 458B tripod with the 410
geared head (or maybe the 486RC2 ball head..)
Weight is 2.4Kg for the tripod.
I would value anyone's opinion on this set up as well before I go and splash
the cash.....

I would suggest for a tripod something like the Gitzo G1228. It is a 4
section carbon tripod. For a head something like the Gitzo G1277M or a
Manfrotto 486 (also goes by no. 3413 depending on where you are buying).
Both of those heads would easily handle your 10D with the lens you
mentioned. If plan on sometime using the camera with a bigger lens then you
might have to upsize to something like the Manfrotto 488 series heads, but
those of course add a little more weight.

Eat lots of protein and exercise regularly.

The 3021 is overkill for this. The next step down -- Bogen 3001 or
equiv. -- is substantially lighter and just as stable if you don't
extend the legs all the way. Get a $10 portable stool.

I use a Gitzo 1325 with a Wimberley, or said 3001 with an Acratech ball
(depending). Can you afford $500 (+ more for the heads)? Even if you
could, would it make sense for a 10D with a 250mm lens?

I have that set-up too but only use it for holding my side arm. For general
shooting a 3001 with a ball head weighs about half what the 3021 legs
weigh - without a head.

The 3001 doesn't have the height as (a foot lower) the 3021 (which the
OP specified as a requirement), and it's only one pound lighter.
The 724 weighs a pound less than the 3001, and is as tall as the 3021.
It supports 7+ pounds, according to the website.
I have an old 3021 and I think it's great, but I'm not sure the
difference between 5 pounds and 3 (not counting the head...) is so huge
that I'd replace it.
