i'm not really planning to OC or Crossfire right now. maaaaaybe down the road but i'm not sure. I know the stock 6850 is a bit slower than the 5850 but it's newer and cheaper. is there a noticeable difference between the two cards?

So you have $100-$120 to spend on the prossesor or both?
I would go with the 5850 it is slightly more powerful and you would see a greater FPS gain with the 5850.From an O.C. point of view the 6850 can match the performance of a 5850 but if you O.C. a 5850 it will be equal to a 5870.

I did see a great deal on a 5870 and a PSU if your intrested, it was around $300 for both.

Also what types of game are you looking to play,it would make a slection more accurate for what your needs are.
