Hi All,
I've got a slight twist to the 'How best to clean the LCD display?'
I am using an Averatec C3500 convertible. The manual says just to
use a dry soft cloth. Well I have had the machine for more than a
month, and the dry cloth is just not cutting it.
Is there any cleaner that is safe to use on the display.
BTW, I have been using the laptop with my Garmin eTrex Legend GPS,
and I am impressed by how readable the screen is even in sunny
conditions.
Ciao . . . C.Joseph

A dry cloth is actually likely to scratch the screen surface.
Use eyeglass cleaner (of the type sold in eyglass stores and
departments) with a very soft cloth or a ***SOFT*** paper towel or
tissue. Many paper products, however, are too rought and will scratch
the plastic.

I've had great success with something like a dry T-shirt. If dry does
cut it, then some window like cleaner and a T-shirt works for me.
I used to use paper products, but they do scratch the plastic really
badly. Although cotton T-shirts doesn't seem to hurt anything in my
experience.
Cheers!

Never use any paper products on a plastic surface. Your optician will tell
you this.

REally??
I've been using paper products to clean my plastic specs for years without
any scratches!
Chat up any optician and they'll tell ya that there are 3 types of lenses in
the market,
Top 1: German brand
2: Jap
3: Other countries.
I'm using a slightly more expensive Jap plastic lens and so that might the
reason why my lenses are so resistant to scratches.
Anyway, back to the question about cleaning screens.
I find that a soft cloth coupled with a spray on cleaner (yup, those type of
sprays which you see Macdonald's employees use on their glass doors) works
like a charm.
I use this combination for cleaning the LCD screens of my electronic devices
such as my mobile, digital cam etc...
No scratches whatsoever and the screens become extremely clean.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the input.
I think I should clarify my original question . . . the Averatec
C3500 is a trans-reflective touch screen. I don't know enough about
touch screens (actually uses a pen) so that is why I am concerned
about the proper cleaning technique.

along the eyeglasses line... some eyeglasses shops sell 'cleaning kits'
where the solution isn't really the prize, it's the 'rag', which is lint-
free, soft and strong. those have worked very well with my lcd screens
over time - even good enough to take a dried droplet off with a bit of
fingernail scratching through the 'rag'.

Hi Good Man,
I did buy two of those clothes (man were they pricey at $5 a pop),
but it doesn't do he job dry. That is why I asked. Right now I am
using distilled water and elbow grease.

A year or so ago, I got new glasses with an anti-glare coating that was
really hard to keep clean. The optometrist recommended Bausch & Lomb
"Sight Savers": pre-moistened tissues individually wrapped. They work
great on my laptop screen. You can get them in the grocery/drug store.
BTW, the supermarket generic ones don't work as well.
