OP said (or tried to say) he would be running virtual machines, which needs many physical cores and lots of RAM. How many VM's at a time? What applications will run on the machine?

Any current motherboard with four RAM slots will support at least 16 GB of RAM. The real question is how many VMs do you intend to run on this system and what will the VMs be doing? If you need 10 GB of RAM to run the VMs, you probably are running several VMs at once and thus may need more CPU power than a typical desktop CPU can provide. You might be best off building a dual-CPU server machine rather than a typical desktop, but we'd need to know what those VMs are doing before we can really say what would be best for you.
