The i5 2500 is slightly more expensive than the Phenom II X4 980. Which one would be a better value at stock speeds, considering the price of the motherboard too. AM3+ would be Bulldozer ready and some are cheaper than the cheapest Z68. I don't plan to overclock anything.

Phenom II X4 980 - 3.7GHz - 6MB L3 cache
i5 2500 - 3.3GHz (3.7GHz turbo boost) - 6MB L3 cache

Not sure if turbo boost is worth it.

Plus, anyone know where Phenom II X4 980s are sold? It got released in the beginning of this month, so how long would it take to be available for retail?

EDIT: What about gaming?

Here is what you should be looking at:
The i5 2400 in the bench should be almost the same with only a difference of 200mhz between i5 2500 and i5 2400 you should see below to gain a view of how the i5 2500 should perform.

The better value at stock speeds is the core i5 2500 with z68 motherboard. The only negative with intel in my opinion is that you wont be able to upgrade anything newer like intel cpu socket 2011 unless you buy another fastest same generation intel cpu and same socket 1155.
Amd is less powerful that would be the negative thing.
positiv amd cpu & motherboard; is cheaper has the full standard features that intel except for some .. and is upgradable for next gen bulldozer cpu's.
I have not found that PhenomIIx4 980 either.. I don't know why, it's been a while it was released..

*** $120! Jesus, poor people buying the dual core Phenom IIs for $110. ><

The 965 seems to be $120 as well after the promo code, til the 5/31.

Building a gaming rig was never so easy/cheap!

I almost want a 2nd rig now for my girlfriend, hehe.
