What does COM stand for

Hey guys I'm doing my notes and I can't find what does COM stand for (A+ class)

The question is
What is the relationship between the serial port and the COM ports? Between the parallel port and LPT ports?

Serial devices use COM ports for system resources. Parallel devices use LPT ports for resources.
