Hi All,

I am back again looking for recommemdation for a real good game GPU that match my Brisbane chip.

Is there such a thing as a GPU to CPU bottleneck? But that's want i want to avoid anyway.

I want to match it to a good GPU. I currently have a HD5450 which perform OK in low to medium settings but cannot cut it when push to max settings of the games I play. I play COD4, COD2, Red Alert3 and other CnC games.

Dont want to splash out on a card that will not give the best performance because of the old AM2 chip. I always had ATI cards in the past, so I am familiar with their range but I want to know what you had which works best for the games I play.

I have currently have the following components:

Athlon64 X2 5600
SEAGATE Barracuda 160GB
Gigabyte GA-M55S-S3
2GB PC2-5300 667MHZ
Sapphire HD 5450 1GB DDR3
Coolermaster Elite 330 Case
Coolermaster 500W psu
Windows 7

What GPU can you recommend that will work best for my system? Im sure most of you here had good experience using different GPU and can suggest me one.

Have a good Christmas to all.

What is your monitor resolution?
As the resolution increases the workload for the graphics card increases faster than that for the CPU.
Also, how much do you intend to spend?

Thanks for the reply coozie7,

I will have a read at that link to sent.

I have a LG 22'' on 1920 x 1080 res on most of the games I play.

None of the games you listed are very hard on the graphics, with the strategy games being (obviously) more dependant on the CPU than the GPU.
That said, at such a high resolution and with a 'weak' CPU I think you should be looking at the HD5750/GTS450 class of card as being being the upper limit with the HD4670/DDR3 GT240 as the lower.

I'd go for the GTS450, that small cooler on the HD5750 looks like it could be noisy under load but the performance is about the same.
If you're in the U.K. here's a few other sites to look at: Overclockers, Dabs, Microdirect, Scan, CCL and Misco but there are plenty of others. And do n't forget to look at your local suppliers and the big chains after Christmas, even PC World can throw up surprises on sale days ;)
Now, I do n't want to sound rude, but X3 TC is calling and after 3 12 hour nights I'm up for a fight with the Khaak!

coozie7,

I saw that small fan in the XFX too which can be an issue with cooling too. I will look for a better price on the GTS 450 after xmas.

Thanks again.

You are welcome, good luck with the hunt.

Anything above a HD 5670 will cause a CPU bottleneck.Since you're gaming at 1920x1080, you're severely limited by that old CPU.You should get a whole new computer, I think.

Time for a full system upgrade if you want to play at 1920 x 1080.
