Decent Gaming Setup?

Hey first time user here and just wondering if this is a decent gaming rig. Also i know the graphics card sucks so any advice on what to upgrade to would be good too.

Processor: AMD Athlon II X3 445 (trying to unlock 4th core but can't find ACC in BIOS)

Graphics: ATI Radeon 4200

RAM: 4GB

OS: Windows 7 64

More about decent gaming setup
  1. ATI Radeon 4200 does indeed suck @ gaming.
What power supply do you have installed? That determines what video card you can add.
What is the resolution of your monitor?

Athlon II X3 445 is a good CPU for gaming.
Not all pre-built systems include ACC for core unlocking.

What make/model of computer do you have?
  2. only have 250W power supply atm but willing to upgrade if its not too expensive.

    Monitor resolution is 1440 x 900.

    Its an HP p6632f.
  3. Probably the best thing to do is visit the HP community forums and see what other p6632f owners are using for a video card upgrade with that 250W PSU.

Sapphire HD 4650 website a $50 video card that would match the 1440x900 resolution OK. The MFGR recommends a 400W PSU for the whole system. But some research on the HP communnity website will let you know for sure if the 250W HP PSU can run a card like that.

ZOTAC GeForce GT 220 512MB Video Card $65 and $15 rebate recommends a 300W PSU and should work in your system.
  4. ^ I don't trust HP OEM power supplies AT ALL. They SUCK hard core. But hey, might as well give it a shot.
  5. Best Graphics Cards For The Money: February 2011 will give you recommendation for several different price ranges and also mention what type of gaming experience that card would give you on different resolution monitors.
Radeon HD 4650 Great 1280x1024 performance in most games, 1680x1050 with lowered detail
Radeon HD 5670 Exceptional 1680x1050 performance in most games, 1920x1200 in most games with lowered detail
    and so on.

The Radeon HD 5670 would give you that Exceptional performance on your 1440x900 monitor.
You could pick one up for around $65 after rebate: ttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121410
And it would require an 'average' 400W PSU or a very good 350W PSU.
  6. IMO, only give that HP 250W PSU a a shot if you find the other HP owners have already been successful using it for a specific video card.

I looked on the HP forums but couldnt really find anything for the p6632f at all, or i might not be looking hard enough
  9. Well these may be theoretical. But as you can see, the 4830 beats out the 5670 most of the time. Granted the 5670 has DX11.

Also we see 4830>4770. So from there we draw that 4830>5670.

That psu would be a good option if i was in the states but i'm in Canada and its only 10$ off instead of 30$ and theres no free shipping on the canadian website..
  11. Any local stores where you can pick up a PSU? The Canadian shipping charges are pretty high.

Are these cards good for a 1440 x 900 res monitor? or does it not matter?

I havent really checked out any stores yet but thats what i was planning to do.
  14. Both are good at your resolution. But if the 4830 performs better at a lower price, why not get that? The 5670 offers DX11 but weaker perf.
  15. HD 5670 has much stronger DX11 game support.

i was looking at the rosewill ones but it looks like a lot of them have bad reviews.. but most of them are cheaper and have free shipping.
  17. http://www.amazon.ca/OCZ-700W-StealthXStream-Power-Supply/dp/B001IZ5O0M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1298682929&sr=8-3

Pretty good 45$ w/ free shipping. 700w OCZ StealthXstream. Not a FANTASTIC power supply but darn decent. It's out of stock sadly.
  18. COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power Plus 500W @ NewEgg $40 & $4 shipping, $10 rebate and better reviews.

@ Tigerdirect I had a test shipping charge of $9.50
  19. ^ Good find.

I can vouch for Cooler Master here. They're Rebates are solid. Bought a Cooler Master Scout, Cooler Master Silent Pro 700w 80+, and a Extreme 460 I believe. All had MIRs (they really work with Fry's do get these deals). Total of like 30-50$ of MIRs got them all. I believe it was 15$ MIR for the scout, 25$ for the Silent Pro and 10$ for the Extreme 460.

Be patient though, took them like an interval of 1-3 months for each product. So after I bought it and sent the MIR took at least 2 months.
  20. ok so right now im looking at the cooler master for psu and the 4830 or 5670
  21. You never did say what your budget was.
A bigger PSU gives you extra video card options, depending on the budget.
  22. My budget would would be max 150$
  23. SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100283VX-2L Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB $130 & free shipping $20 rebate looks like a decent option if you don't mind playing the rebate game to keep the total cost under $150 after rebate.
  24. i expected the HD 5750s to be less expensive.. but they're not.
    HIS H575FN1GD Radeon HD 5750 1GB $110 & $5 shipping
    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161309
  25. ^ Great recommendation. That'll set you for a monitor expansion too!

WR2, you got to see this deal....
    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125316
    LAWL SOLD OUT
    A 5870 for 150$! AND 20$ RBATE?
  26. No surprise there why they sold out.
  27. ^ What? It's 260$ on the US site... WE HAVE THE MSRP at 100$ MORE!
  28. I suspect it was a $100 posting error and they got snapped up before NewEgg got a chance to correct it.
Or that 'Sold Out' notice might or might not have been true if they wanted to stop sales @ that price.
  29. lol oops forgot this one is already up.. fail
  30. SAPPHIRE 100287L @ $79.99 $4 shipping & $10 rebate looks good.
  31. Ok so I think im gonna go with the 5750 and the cooler master. comes to 148.98 after rebate.
  32. Sounds good.
Should be really strong on a 1440x900 monitor.
  33. Thanks for the help guys.
