Hi all,
Will I be sorry if I install XP on a Dell Inspiron 5000 notebook with a 500 mhz Celeron and 128 mb Ram?
Any opinions would be appreciated.

if all your software and hardware is compatible with win xp (bah!!), you should have no problem.
however, win xp's (bah!!) minimum system requirments are a little steep (pentium class 300 mhz, 128 mb ram, and 2 gig of free hard drive space).
it may run a little on the mediocre side on your comp (cuz of the 500 celeron and ram) but it should work.
why not install win 2k in your system?

I don't claim to know anything about everything, I just tell people what I know.

Hi

Last week we upgraded 3 Dell Inspiron 5000e and 4 Dell Inspiron 5000 notebooks that were configured as:

a) Two with ME
b) Three with 98 S/E
c) Two with Windows 2000 Professional

to Windows XP Professional.

All systems work like a charm, no troubles at all. We did bump up the RAM to 256MB in most of these systems as RAM is pretty reasonable at this point. We are using Mushkin 128MB and 256MB SODIMM Modules, if you don't know the correct RAM model numbers, send me an email and I'll send you the correct part numbers. You might want to consider a new 10 or 20GB hard disk while you are at it. The IBM TravelStar drives are great for this (which is what usually shipped in these notebooks, but were sized smaller) and it gives you the capability of starting with a nice clean load while still keeping your legacy operating system and configuration on your old drive.

The 5000's that we upgraded are running the latest releases of CADKEY, DataCAD, Act2000 and Office XP and are working faster and better than ever.

I installed WinXP Home on a Dell Inspiron 4000 with 700MHz Celeron and 128MB of RAM. The system originally shipped with WinME and worked fine.
But I liked the way WinXP worked on my Desktop PC so I installed it on my Laptop.
It worked a lot slower because the memory swap file was constantly used. So I installed another 128MB SODIMM and now it works great.
My laptop has a 10GB hard drive. With all my software and a couple games I have used 4GB.
If you can go to Dell and download all the XP driver updates for your model laptop and burn them to CD. (Saves time plus you have a driver backup disk.) Also it would be a good idea to flash your bios to the latest version before installing XP.
