I have an old IBM ThinkPad 760ED with a 33.6 Data Fax VOD Modem on COM
4 that wouldn't respond in diagnostics.. OpenComm would come up w/
"Cannot open port".
So I downloaded the hardware maintenance manual from IBM's web site and
reseated the MWave DSP board (this requires taking the entire laptop
apart). Now the modem is on COM 2, COM 2 is disabled in system ->
properties, and the modem works.

the mwave is not a plug and play device in windows, it is a multimedia,
DSP modem. You will have to download the appropriate drivers from the
ibm site and install it. if installed properly, the mwave sound will
show up, mwave com port will show up and the modem will show up. hope
that helps.
