Buying HD 4830, need advice

Hello everyone,

This is last thing on my list for a new PC that will last for about 2-3 years, I have done alot of research and I finally came through with the HD 4830 as I only have a 1280x1024 CRT screen but still 1024x768 res looks good on it. Anyways, my question was that I have 2 brands to choose from, one is Diablotek HD 4830 from TigerDirect, and PowerColor AX4830 from Newegg, So which one should I buy, basically Newegg is cheaper but with taxes and all the price becomes the same as I don't have to pay taxes to TigerDirect.

My other Specs are:
AMD Athlon II x4 620 OEM
Cooler Master Hyper 101a
2x2 GB DDR3 Mushkin 1066MHz
ASUS M4A78LT-M
Integrated ATi Radeon 3000
Antec EarthWatts 500Watts
Antec Outside Case
2x case fans directing the air outside from the back
2x 1TB WD hard drives in RAID 0

My uses will be mostly gaming and school work, and I just want to play Bad Company 2 at Med-High settings at 1280x1024 with >30 FPS, I sometimes record too but I'm sure the quad will handle that. I will not be doing any crossfire nor OC'ing. Lastly my budget as you might have guessed is $75.

Thanks!

The Pwercolor seems like the better option as powercolor is a more trusted brand. I don't know so much about Diablotek. So IMO the PowerColor is the best bet. Plus from what I've dealt with Newegg. Newegg has GREAT service.

In my opinion your first upgrade should be your monitor.

i'd go powercooler as i've nevr had any issues at all with thier cards (beyond nto overclocking well but hey they work at refrence speeds so thats not a huge negative) , diobloteck i have limited experience with but nothign hugely bad, person bought it we went to install and had to rma as card was doa, tigerdirect crossshipped us a new one and it worked fine and to my knowlage its still working

if that is all you can spend get a 4850, gts 250, 9800 gtx, gt 240+ off off ebay for a little better performance. Heck you might even be able to get a 4870 or gtx 260 for cheap if you are lucky.... just a thought

yea, if there is no intention of getting a new monitor anytime soon then a 4830 is fine. that's why i bought my gts 450 , at 1280x1024 it's all i need (though i just boguht a 2nd for sli, just have to pick it up form ups i missed em 3 times DOH!) then i'll do a better monitor as money allows.

for the OP ifyou really plan on using this monitor for the duration of the card its a perdfectly reasonable choice, i'd heed jjb's advice if you plan on getting a enw monitor before a enw video card though

lol Jjb, the 4830 for 1280x1024 will max out most games.

Notice, it does exceptionally well in 1280x1024.

valid point but in case he wants some extra muscle for the future, for the price of a 4830 I personally would just spend a little more on a used 250/260 or 4850/70, but yes you are right a 4830 should be more than enough im just thinking in terms of the years to come but if no moniter upgrade is in the future than the 4830 will be just fine.

Hmm... I do see some cheap used items on ebay, and new ones too! I also saw a few 9800 GT's which didn't have a power connector from XFX at newegg. But I have had a bad experience with used things, so I think I'll stay away.

Well turns out I will be getting a 19" LCD monitor later this year, some 1600x1200 one (Cant wait :bounce:  ), so I will need future proofing, I think both the 9800 GT and HD 4830 will be useless by 2011?

So now I'm going wait till the AMD 6990 comes and drops the prices of 5970 and eventually of 5770 and 5750, and with the power supply the max I can go with is a single 6 pin PCIe power connector requiring card (6850). Thanks for all the suggestions, but I think I'll wait a few months, for now, I am good with low settings on Bad Company 2, I am getting a new sealed XFX 9500 GT for $20 from a friend, which is one sweet deal. Surely, by the end of January, the 6990 will be here to drop the prices. Again thanks for all the replies, but till the new monitor comes (about 2-3 months), I won't have to worry about games. I'll post here again, when I get the card in a few months. Thanks again and Happy New Year! :)

No not really, the 9800GT and 4830 will still be playable depending on your resolution. The 5970, 5770, 5750 isn't going to drop a huge amount. I love how people think because a new card comes out the older gen will drop a huge amount. It'll only be slightly. if I were you, you'd be better off with a 460 since the 460 is the same price as the 5770 but better. (768mb model).

Oh by the way the reason why the 5770 and 5750 aren't going to drop, they don't plan to release any low end cards anytime soon. They're keeping the 5770 and 5750 so don't expect those to drop price either.

yeah i dont see those cards dropping much personally I would go for a 6850 as soon as you get the new monitor, the 9500 gt will be enough to get you by at low res for now

contrary to others i think the 5970 will drop in price alot... but i also think they are gonna be phased out and hard to find very soon.

5750 and 5770 though those prices may creep down over time but until there's a 6xxx series low-mid card there will not be a big drop , and even then there will be supply issues shortly
