It seems that AMD keeps moving forward with unlockable hardware as the 6950 can be turned into a 6970 with a BIOS flash.

some guys at TPU also have confirm this. i bet some of the folks that already got their hands on 6970 will felt got rip off :lol: . either way it is good for those who want to get the card. right now i'm interested in power consumption and how much this card can reach 6970 stock frequencies as i heard 6950 have some kind of difficulty to reach 880mhz without volt increase

I kind of doubt that "ALL" are unlockable. Likely the majority are but I'm sure AMD isn't just throwing out the chips that have a defect in a shader cluster considering they can be sold as HD6950s.

The default voltage for the HD6950 is 1.1v and it is 1.175v on the HD6970. Flashing the HD6970 BIOS onto the card should raise the default voltage appropriately.

sounds logical to me. also heard people speculating that AMD might lock this option for the next batch of card. things really did get more and more interesting for the GPU world

this is awesome, and the card has even dual BIOS so if the flash goes wrong the card still works haha
