Just bought an Olympus 5060 yesterday and already beginning to feel there is
a fault.

Sometimes the on/off switch appears to not quite be working. When camera
switched on it will just turn itself off but if I push the on/off switch a
bit more it comes on but often goes off again when I let go.

Also I have had menu option suddenly appear on the screen when no button is
pressed.

Is it me or is this a known problem?

That sounds like the famous "5060 mode dial failure". Has been widely
discussed in most online forums. It doesn't get better over time and
your only option is to send the camera back under warranty for repairs.

Thnaks Alfred

I have just been googling and realise I am one of the unlucky ones.

I am enjoying learning how to use the camera and assume it is worth getting
a repair?

The Nikon 990 suffered from mode dial problems, although you could effect
a repair simply by putting a drop or two of electronic switch-cleaner near
the gap of the rotating part of the dial, and then rotating the switch to
work the switch-cleaner in.

Might that also work for the 5060?

Cheers,
David

Most people who use it are happy with it. Personally I never considered
it because of the slow lens (F2.8-4.8). The 8080 has more resolution and
comes with a faster lens, but it is a lot heavier.

I don't know - haven't used a 5060 myself, and have never experienced
such a problem with the other cameras (1400, 2000, 4040, 5050 and 8080).
From what I've heard in the 5060 it seems to be a software problem, less
a hardware one.

Ah, I didn't appreciate that.

I had a mode dial switch problem with my 2020 and fixed with a couple of
drops of switch-cleaner. Dunno about the 5060, but from what I've heard
it might really require factory service, being a true hardware problem.

Actually, it's probably a problem with the design of the switch.
Olympus is replacing the mode dial to repair these cameras, AFAIK. I
would expect that if it's the camera software it'd happen more often.
An interesting article on the issue is at:

http://www.wrotniak.com/photo/c5050/c5060-dial.html

I don't really believe that "13 +/- 4%" of these cameras are failing,
though; I can't imagine that anyone could tell no matter how they
analysed the negative messages on Yahoo. The camera (when it works) is
worth the trouble; an extended warranty for $40 is a good idea,
though.....

The camera went back to the supplier and they shipped - same day they
received - a new one and so far all OK.

It seems it is a good camera.

Anyone knows if we can expect the problem solved in the new C-7070 WZ.. or
should I go for the 8080?

(I was originaly gonna go for the 5060, as that is already above the level
I need)

I would hope so.... although it hasn't been specifically addressed in
the press releases so far, of course. The camera itself isn't due until
? March, maybe?

The C-7070's going to start at $700 U.S., I'd expect it to quickly drop
to the ~$550-600 range that the C-5060 sold at for most of it's life.
No-one is really expecting miracles from the C-7070; it's not going to
be a big change from the C-5060 AFAIK.

The C-5060 is a steal right now - I've seen it for under $400 U.S. at
B&H, brand new. Still, the mode dial problem is apparently cropping up
on new cameras, so it's buyer beware. I've owned a C-5060 for about 8
months now, and nary an issue; I'm likely just lucky so far. I did buy
an extended warranty. So, if you're willing to perhaps putting up with
the possibility of the repair, it might be worth your while to just get
the C-5060 from the bargain bin while it's still available....

There's no additional warranty avaliable here where I live, and the 5060
is around $700; it was $800. The C8080 is $1k. See the problem?

Buyin' from abroad is out, warranty issues.

Fixing the mode-dial problem without warranty costs almost as much as the
digicam itself here.

So, whatever I get, it has to work!

(please leave a part of the text you're replying too, I almost missed this

Hmmmm.... I see what you mean. I'd start looking elsewhere, frankly; I
like my C-5060 but I wouldn't have gotten it if I'd known about the
mode dial issue. You don't want to be the one to have the dubious honor
of posting the first C-7070 mode dial problem report!

The Canon G6 is receiving rave reviews, as is the Panasonic FZ20 - have
you considered those? I'm not buying anytime soon, but the next time I
do buy, it'll be something more like the FZ20 than the C-7070 - that
sweet F/2.8 superzoom lens and OIS is really what I'm lacking right
now....

Yeah, exactly.

Yeah, I'm gonna consider both of those, but at that price, I can get the Oly
8080. And here we go again! :)
