Going to build a system for running Oracle servers (as wells as VM images) and also going to use this as a home theater (Media server etc). Need feedback on whether following build is fine...

i5-2500K
Asus P8P67 Deluxe
GELID Solutions Tranquillo 120mm Hydro Dynamic CPU Cooler
G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1600MHz 12GB (3x4GB)
Asus EAH5670/DI/512MD5/V2 ATI Radeon HD 5670 Chipset (775MHz )
Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB SATA III
WD 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower
LG WH10LS30 10X Blu-ray Burner
Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 High Performance 750W Power Supply

Questions that I have
1. Should I go for i7-2600k as it has hyper threading?
2. is 12GB needed or can I just live with 8GB?

Hello vmguy;

Your set of 3x4GB RAM is intended for triple channel motherboard like the X-58.
The P67/H67 motherboards take dual channel kits 2x2GB, 2x4GB, etc.
8GB? How many VM machines at any one time? 4 or under, you should be fine with 8GB.

You could easily get by with the Core i5 2400 3.1 Ghz quad core CPU, a H67 motherboard and leave the HD 5670 out of the build by using the i5's Intel HD 2000 integrated graphics. The aftermarket CPU cooler won't be needed either.
Drop the PSU down a few sizes to 380~400W.

Maybe find a nicer HTPC type case, one with a nice remote controller?

Thanks WR2 for your suggestions.

I need a HDMI out . So I thought I would get a video Card as onboard chipset are not that great. i5's Intel HD 2000 integrated graphics.

Is Intel Core i7-960 Bloomfield 3.2GHz and GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R combo fine? So that I can use 12GB of memory?

Thanks.

P67/H67 boards can do 8GB / 12GB (2x4GB+2x2GB) / 16GB (4x4GB) RAM amounts.

The integrated HD 2000/3000 are that good - you wouldn't need a video card for server / home theater duties.

The P67 boards don't have HDMI out for the IGP but the H67 boards do. While the H67 motherboard's aren't ideal for overclocking you can nudge them up a bit - Core i5-2400 3.6Ghz
But for server & home theater needs you don't need OC'ing at all.

For any of these systems (P67/H67/X58) with a HD 5670 video card system you'd only need a 400~500W PSU

Thanks for your feedback.

I would prefer to go with P67 as I can overclock. Thats that reason I am getting i5-2500k.

I would get a 500W PSU as it would save some money. :)

I may run 2 or 3 VM images which need lots of RAM. So 12GB itself is very less for me. As you suggested, I would get 2 dual channel kits (2x 4GB & 2 x2GB).

I am totally new to that HTPC thing. Is there any place I can get started to know the list of stuff that I should buy to assemble it?

Thanks.
