A few have said AMD's new 9xx series chipsets look rather suspiciously like rebadged 890 series chipsets, with perhaps a new BIOS, and, certified to work with BD when it arrives.

It is a rebaged 8 chipset. AMD has said so. But they did it so that you know its AM3+ compatible, and not have to worry if you need a bios update.

If a 890 chipset is placed on a mobo with a AM3+ socket, one that has the proper amount of activated pins, it will work with BD. The 9 series is a 890 rebadged but the socket is whats truly different.

Correct. And to prevent confusion, you know that a 9xx WILL work while an 8xx might.
