Upgrading from my Q8400 to a 1090T BE

Hi. I've been looking at getting a new cpu for a while now since my q8400 cant be overclocked. My mobo is a g41mt-d3 so im looking to replace that too and move to AMDs Hex Proccessor the 1090T. It's really cheap at the moment so i was wondering is the upgrade worth it? I know games wont use all 6 cores but the turbo mode and higher clock speed looks tempting.

More about upgrading q8400 1090t
  1. My budget is £150 to £200 and its mainly for gaming. The other AMD processors are roughly the same price but are only quad cores so I thought Id just get the one with more cores.

What do you mean - cant be overclocked?
It overclocks to 3.6 ghz with a cooler, fairly easily.
  3. Yeah but my motherboard wont overclock at all. its pretty useless. I have been looking at I5s too but im getting a bit tired of intel and would like to try AMD
  4. A cheap fix would be to replace just your board. Get one that allows you to OC and that Q8400 will show you what it can do.

If you want new parts, I agree with PS3hacker. That Intel build will be a lot better for gaming.
  5. If primarily a gaming system, just realize that the X4's outperform X6s at the same clock speed (unused cores, Win 7 OS overhead, etc...), and that even the older i7-920 at 2.66 GHz stock clocks outperforms AMDs X4/975 at 3.6 GHz....

The i5-2400 'walks all over' both, and at near X4-levels of pricing.....
  6. If you want an excellent upgrade go for 2500k and have it overclock. A 1090T BE is not worth it.
