Alternitives to FTP

I would like to setup a home file server of some kind that can be able to upload and download files over the internet. I use to use an FTP server, but keep hearing that FTP has horrible security, So I would like to move to something else that has better security.
I know there are some NAS drives that will do this, but I all ready have a server 2008 server running as a local file server and would like to just use that.

Can also just use windows file sharing and lock down the policy so it uses encryption and SMB2.0/etc

How do you lock down that policy, for SMB2.0?
