I have a serial dongle but no serial port on my laptop. I also have a
targus mobile docking station that has a serial connector but it
doesn't recognize anything connected. Is there anything I can do to get
my laptop to recognize the dongle.

Well they sell USB to RS232 (that's a serial port) and also sell PC Card
to RS232. But I don't know if they work with dongles or not. But if I
had to bet, I'd say that PC Card type would have a better chance.

Cheers!

The docking station is often a device that needs drivers installed.
Check the user manual and computer vendor support for instructions, if
any. When in the dock, boot to BIOS setup and check for serial port
settings there also. If this is a software security dongle and the
relative program is running and it is not recognized, perhaps the
software vendor can help. It might be that the dongle will not work in
the dock.

terry:

You can get a PCMCIA (PC Card) that provides a serial port that should be
fully recognizable by the software. (Socket makes one.) The USB ones are
not always recognized by the older software.

Very unlikely to work. The software that addresses the dongle probably
does so at the I/O port level, and that will not work through a USB to
serial converter.

The only option may be a PC Card serial port.

That is likely the only way to do this, but even with that there may be
a problem. While the system will assing a COMn port, it may not be 1
thru 2, or even 1 thru 4, and the address won't be one of the four
"standard" serial port addresses. So while this is probably the only
hope, by no means is even this assured to work.
