New Build for Engineering

I am building a system for the first time. I have read through many of the posts here that are related to gaming systems but my application is for engineering specifically ASIC design. I am currently using a relatively high power laptop with 8G of RAM which is not sufficient for even a subset of the design I am doing.

I am looking for advice on selecting components for a system similar to this. I will be running Linux(probably Ubuntu) and don't need a great video card, but am looking for maximum performance so would like to be able to overclock. My price range is probably from about 1200-1500$. I am also looking to purchase as soon as possible, but am limited by motherboards. Are there any on newegg which are good enough for my needs (I would like to overclock).

Does anyone have advice on components for a system like this.

Desktop, I have a 6 month old Sony laptop which has been a major disappointment but will work for more standard things.

Nice suggestions!
for this type of work I would highly recommend two monitors - it really helps with multiple working windows.

Thanks for the help Why_me.

I didn't see a motherboard on the list. Am I missing something or do you have a recommendation.

When I purchased the laptop, I also purchased a 27 inch monitor which is completely dominating my desk. I haven't exactly decided what to do with the monitor yet. My current thought is actually to share the monitor by either doing a remote desktop (VNC) operation through my laptop or just use one of the other inputs to the monitor. I am a bit 2 old to handle dealing with 2 monitors.

The motherboard is combo'd with the RAM. It's in that first post of mine, just click the links. That's 16GB of RAM posted along with the MSI P67 mobo.

Thanks again,

Sadly the motherboard is sold out from newegg, or I probably would have ordered right now. I am probably going to go with a solid state drive because my disk space needs are small, but other than that I'll go with your advice as soon as a motherboard is available.

On some other threads I read some recommendations about more expensive cases and better cooling. Are there any advantages for my system in terms of performance or does it not matter too much.

Those build are gaming builds I'm going to guess. Usually those guys plan on running dual o/c vid cards which produces a lot of heat. But a bargain imo on a case is the Cooler Master Scout. It's on newegg, but that same case is on Amazon for cheaper than newegg, and free shipping.
