Hi Everyone,

I have a very hard decision here.

I have the Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160 and was wondering what sort of boost I would get by using the AMD x6 1090t processor. I will be gaming on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (and Revelations when it comes out in November) and was wondering if I could use the AMD at high setting with no lag, as at the moment I have quite a bit of lag sometimes.

I have been told that the more cores isn't necessarily better for games, and that the Assassin's Creed franchise uses more CPU power than GPU. Am I right?

The Intel PCs are much more expensive. I would just like a processor which runs better than my current Intel Pentium Dual Core and is ready for any further gaming developments yet to come which uses more cores. I will be using the same GFX card that I have at the moment (ATI Radeon HD 5670 1GB) for any PC that I buy.

I am on a <£310 budget.

The PCs I am looking at are:
1. Phenom II x6 1090t @ £300: http://bit.ly/js2CIg
2. Phenom II x4 965 @ £298.90: http://bit.ly/mTnhAe
3. Phenom II x4 840 @ £315: http://bit.ly/meGTyb

The pros I can think about are:
PC 1: Cheaper. Future-proof. More cores. Ready for hard core programs.
PC 2 & 3: Have been complimented for better gaming. No need to spend 'more money' on 1090t, even though it is cheaper.

Please help! I am puzzled as to what to do.

Thanks.

For gaming, you should get a better graphics card. Skewed toward CPU or not, AC (and everything else) will still need a decent GPU.
It's true that most current games aren't able to use more than four cores, and some can only use two. A 955 would do you well; a 965 isn't much better.
Are you set on buying premade? Custom would allow you to get a decent graphics card: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/budget-gaming-pc-phenom-ii-radeon-hd-6850,2903.html
What's your max budget, and are you going to be playing any more demanding games?

I'd get the 1090T, and forget the rest!! With a decent 3.2GHz clock speed [like the x4 955], or straight 3.6ghz turbo on upto 3 cores...its a BIG yes for games that uses 3 or less cores :) Also its comes in at almost the same price for u , barely £2 difference! Also, its solid future proofing; u don't noe how many cores will be needed in say 2-3 years down the road

The x4 840 is supposed to be very cheap!! is that £315 or £215 ??? but mind u, they don't have ANY L3 cache, so i'd stay away from it for gaming

^why? with games in mind, 6 cores are a complete waste. a dual core i3 2100 will outperform that 6 core monster in 99% of games. Out of the processors your chosing go the 965. the 840 is crap, not enough cache.

Of the 3 computers you listed, none come with anything for graphics except the integrated HD 3000, which is too weak to even run Assassins Creed. You'll be purchasing a dedicated video card to put in the computer.

Also if you didn't notice, 2 of those specifically say no operating system included, and the other doesn't mention if it is or isn't included, but since it doesn't list what operating system it comes with I would assume it doesn't include one either. So unless you already have a copy of windows, you'll need to purchase one.

Are those issues factored into this budget of yours?

I have Windows 7 64-bit disc at home.

I've decided that I will be going for the 1090t computer (and for an extra 1 quid a 750W PSU). Thanks for all of your help.
