:pt1cable: I have a home built PC w/ AMD 9550 quad core CPU, Gigabyte MB, 4 gigs of 800Mhz RAM, Enough air cooling to keep CPU temps to 30 C, a great 450 watt PS and several SATA HD's. My question for the forum is this: Are momentary screen "freezes" normal, or are they an indication of something deeper? I say momentary as in an eyeblink or shorter.

Normal only when things are deeper.......
This is usually an indication of a split second bottleneck somewhere in the system.
If it's not bothering you then it's ok, but if it does, then the root cause is something way deep which you have pretty correctly said.
