Can a cpu fan with 4 pin connector be used on a m/b that has a three pin socket

i have a new 4 pin cpu fan would like to use on a m/b that has 3 pin socket.tryed using just three of the four connection of the four pin fan ,fan work for a second then m/b shut down..

You probably didn't hook it up to the CPU fan pins, which is usually very close to the cpu socket, not near the edge of the motherboard.
