I think your talking about the X3360, you can get it in 2 different steppings (C1 and E0) however, other than that i believe Intel do higher binning on the Xeon CPU's. As long as your board supports the Xeon you should be fine with either id just get the cheaper one if there is a big difference in price.

ones a server line the other is a desktop

i know that lga771 xeons are usually found in servers/workstations.... but this one is lga775, and, as far i know, its used by some people in Q9550-compatible motherboards

hm... could you explain what different stepping means?

the differences depend on the chip, but often it means higher overclocking potential. The G0 stepping Q6600's can overclock alot higher than the older B3 stepping chips.

The X3350 is the same as the Q9450. I have the X3350 on the Rampage Formula, I have also used the X3350 on the P5B Deluxe before I got the Rampage Formula.

As long as the board supports the Core 2 Quad the borad should support the Xeon of the same stepping.

The stepping changes when Intel makes a revision to the CPU. They could add features or change the voltage ranges. Just like the Phenom, The B3 steppings are a revision of the B2 stepping. The B3 fixed the problem with the Phenoms.

Yes the stepping can effect overclocking but not always. The G0 stepping lowered the Voltage for the Q6600 so it could be clocked higher then the B3 counterparts.

They are the same chip. Just one is branded for servers and also enhanced for them but will run the same.

Used to be that server chips were the same as desktop chips just better silicon capable of OCing better due to lower voltages and such.

hmm... AFAIK it depends from mainboard; from it's chipset- not from processor (we are not talking about i3/5/7 processor).
