have a system with
MB ASROCK 4COREDUAL-SATA2 PT880 775
CPU INTEL|P4 631 3.0G 65NM 775 2M R
2G of ram (stated max on board)

the curent video card is fairly old ( ok ancient :o ) radeon 9800ultra
only problem wiht it is its limited to the older games with shader 2

was looking at 2 different cards a while ago since the board has both pcie-16 and AGPx8 slot I dont have a preference on either.

pcie

AGP (which looks like it might be better)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814161337

was looking upto 130 price range. I'm sure there is better in that range now.
last chart i saw on a simular AGP was listed in 2008 charts but if I recall the memory set was a bit different

also was wondering if this board was really limited to the stated 2G ram

Specs for the ASRock 4CoreDual-SATAII motherboard:

Yes, you really are limited to 2GB RAM max (either DDR or DDR2). Also, I'd remind you that the PCI-Ex16 slot is limited to x4 mode.

While I wouldn't personally recommend either of the two (should go with a full system upgrade), you should also list your power supply specs before anyone can make a recommendation.

I not sure if its a 350w or a 400w I'll at it once I get back. I think its a 400w as there is a dvd +/-RW drive as well and the additional power plugin for the 9800 ultra
the board isnt THAT old.. is it??(got it 2 yrs ago I beleive) was hoping I wouldnt need anything along the lines of tnt or such. LOL :) I know back out the 6 case screws undo the 5 phillps hold down screws on the board .. chuck the inside out... :(

both cards are low end now, well if you can find a hd 5570 ddr5,it would be way to go.

closest I could find was this

Gddr3 not 5 :S the rest are listed as regular ddr3

would this one work? and how well?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814127523

unless they changed the model number here is a 5670 (redwood seen in a different site that the 5550 with "new gddr5 memory would be dubbed redwood)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814121362

there are a bunch of 5670 available still but the chart at
http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 704-7.html doesnt specify which manufacture was tested for the 5670 HIS, powercool, sapphire, etc

the power supply will need changing Im surprised it still runs actually wiht all thats in there. its a
Codegen atx2 model 250x1 350W

dont really want to upgrade the board just yet dont have enough for card and boards. so the power supply would still have to be atx2 compatible with the 20pin atx and the 4 pin 12v line for the board

was actually looking at a even better vid. board

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814103116
or maybe
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814261088

dont really want to go this expensive but I hear the difference between the 5830 and the 5850 is significant especially the black edition list here

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 50%20black

with maybe this supply probaly overkill
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814261088
or this not as efficent 72% but 20 less

hd 4670 1 gb would be a good choice. if your motherboard is compatible with the hd 5770 buy it. i dont think your motherboard is compatible with that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp096bizs6c gameplay video of just cause 2 on hd 4670 on pentium 4!!
you can play most of the modern games with that card i think!
if you get a chance fully upgrade your system. buy a new motherboard etc.. but if you are into gaming buy an amd processer its cheap and performs well in gaming and other applications. hope this helps!
