This should not be so hard. My computer is currently running like crap thanks to a POS power supply and the damage it has caused to my other hardware, but I finally found a game with low enough requirements to play until I fix my comp.

Recettear, a sprite based (and quite good) little game. However, running the game in full screen leads not only to the stretching of the 4:3 game on my 16:9 monitor, but it also introduces instability leading to crashes.

So I decide to play it windowed. Except that even using the d3doverrider to force v-sync on the game tears terribly, almost as though the v-sync is not working at all.

So finally I decide to just change the aspect ratio like I did on my last video card (nvidea) only to find there seems to be no option anywhere. I ran a search for a 'how-to' and saw many pics of the catalyst control centre just like mine, except they have the required optiion. It simply isn't there. I am using the current catalyste suite, so I can only assume my particular card (radeon 5400) can't do this. There is also no option for this in my 'change desktop settings,' and the 'desktop reolution' page is identical, consisting of resolution, color and choice of display device.

So, what else could I do to prevent the tearing in the window, or to force the game to run at 4:3?

Have you tried to pick a resolution that is 4:3? As for the tearing, when I used d3doverrider back in the day it worked, but a year or so ago I tried it again ( I think for triple buffering? not sure) and it didn't do anything for v-sync for me.

There is no 4:3 options available, although I could likely set up a suston resolution...

Thanks, but I just dug out an old monitor, makes my desk even more cluttered, but running dual monitors just adds something... techie to the room.

are you saying that your system refuses to show the #1 resolution on a pc, 1280 x 1024? I know its not technically 4:3 but its close enough.
