Some observations on ship behaviour in simulated battles

If you set ships to "2nd wave" they end up circling the planet in the
centre. If they are on "first wave", they head for the planet. The first
one to arrive sticks over it, and the second circles very close. This
overrides Standoff commands.

Standoff doesn't work properly, if at all. Ships with high attack
bonuses are meant to be more manoeuvrable than big slow ships. In fact,
big slow ships dance around small ones. So if you have a big one set to
"Ram" it will destroy a small one using Standoff.

There is clearly something deeply wrong with Standoff when a Deth Spec
with 800 experience can be outmaneiuvered by a Terra Class Starbase.

    Not totally true, try it with swarms (1st wave) on the same x,y
    settings and with weapons which can shoot (both sides) on the opponent
    before reaching the center, you will see that some ships from the swarm
    will start to circle early, after taking damage. And then a few things
    still depend on the actual settings you are using (not only first and
    second wave).

    Oh sure, in contrast to evasive rating of the ships, which have a much
    smaller effect on combat than attack bonus anyway.
    And then a ship with high top speed in combat does not necessarily mean
    that it is more manoeuvrable than a slower ship in combat...

    Well for one thing there is no big reason to use the max hull speed for
    ships as combat speed, since in case of fighters the combat quickness
    is used for combat speed (and not the actual speed the wing is allowed
    to fly in normal space).

    Even if this would work right, there would be something wrong with the
    balance of vcr combat...
