I just got a new ThinkPad R51. IBM has preloaded the hard drive with so
much of their "recovery" software it takes up quite a chunk of space. How
to I get this back? I think it's in a hidden partition.

Yes, it is a special hidden partition. You need to go into your
system BIOS and disable the "Pre-Desktop" area. It is under the
Security settings. Once you disable it, it will appear to be "un
partitioned" space on your drive.
