Does ASrock extreme3 Gen3 need a sound card?

Exactly as the title says. I've been looking at these 5.1 speakers that are cheap as dirt at the moment, but I am unsure if this mobo that I have coming in the mail supports any form of surround sound or if it needs a sound card. Does anyone know? Also does the board have the right connections for these speakers?

  1. No, but any $25 sound card will beat the quality of the most on-board sound chip : )
  2. If u have by any chance cheap speakers($50) than u not going to be able to tell the difference.

If u have a ($100) headset u will see the difference.
  3. Hello again nikorr! Was your no directed at the "do i need a sound card to run surround sound"

Also could you take a look at the speakers I was considering and let me know if I have the connections needed? I know you are a mobo expert and not a speaker expert, but I thought you might know :)

  4. Hi, these are good speakers, and this card helps, as it is better than on board chip @ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132020
  5. You are awesome nikorr! First off thanks for helping on the various pc building threads I've made the past week or so. You have been beyond helpful.

Do you moderate the Home audio forums? I have questions about audio but I don't want to get off topic in the mobo section :(. No one seems to read the home audio forums though.

Yes here and there, sometimes everywhere.

Post it there and PM me a link of the thread, I will try to help as well as others there : )

And if u post it here, I would just send it to appropriate forum part : )
  7. Also, the sound card free off the load from the CPU. Its good when CPU is loaded : )

That way u free the resources for the CPU.
  8. BTW, that sound card is on sale for like $12!
  9. You mean it's good when the CPU is not loaded?

Nope, its the best for sound, but is also great for the CPU, because the CPU does not have to do the sound decoding, ever : )
  11. Ah gotcha. Also I was looking at the ports on the back of that card you linked me. Those are completely different than the ones on the rear of the asrock board I believe. Does that mean those 5.1 logitech speakers will not work unless I get a sound card like that?

    P.s., check your pm's :D
