Hello Everyone at Tom's

I haven't updated my computer since the intel core 2 duo was cool :) .. With that said it's time for me to upgrade this slow computer. I want to build a nice gaming RIG that can also run the mac VM's (for work).

Parts reusing:
What I currently have:
Power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139006
I believe my power supply is OK 750 Watts with a 32 rail. - It caught on fire once :non: but I replaced the fan and everything has been OK for about a year.

Video Card:
Radeon HD 6870 2GB 256-bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814150563

Parts I could use but shouldn't:
Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231417
I don't want this ram anymore since it's only 1333.

What I've been looking to upgrade
I would love to get the 2600k for a little overclocking.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115070

The motherboard I'm really torn about and its a huge reason I'm here.
I don't plan on getting SLI anytime soon... so I don't need the z68 motherboard then right?

ASUS Sabertooth X58
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131665
$194.99 6×240pin (24GB ram)

ASUS SABERTOOTH P67
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131702
199.99 4×240pin (32GB)

What's the difference from the x58 and the P67?
Anyone suggest a motherboard for around $225?

Ram?:
Would love to have around 24 GB of ram with these VM's for work.
I'm completely open for suggestions.

SSD

\\\ UPDATE to motherboard
I believe I would like to get the SMART cache SSD installed. How should I go about this?

Hi there williamrussellajb,

Do u edit video or audio or other creative tasks?

x79 is not compatible with 2600K.

I would not get this ASRock, even that is a great mobo, because 1 fact. The warranty is only 2 years.

I'd say, this is probably best u can get for the $200. It is very good mobo.

Sure, u can reuse the RAM and OC it to 1600MHz without any issue, and with a click of the mouse : )

Unless u do the video tasks, and want to get 16GB of the RAM : ) I would get 16GB as it is dirt cheap now.

These mobos are for 2 different CPU's. P67 would be for the 2600K.

Forget about that, if u are getting SSD like that above, install all , the system + apps + page file on that directly and there is no need to cache it anymore. It would be good, if your system would be on the HDD.

Your GPU is great, use that : )

U should use with 2600K , dual kit.

32GB 16GB 8GB - assuming u have x 64bit windows.

For more than 16GB RAM, u need Win7 Pro, Ultimate, Enterprise.

No video editing, mostly I run eclipse or multiple VM's for different software testing ( I work as a software QA engineer)
This PC will be for gaming and mostly multitasking with work (multiple applications + every web browser open you can think of), eclipse IDE, VM's (Mac, windows, linux).

I'm sold :)
MAX 32 GB but the 8GB ram is very pricy.. so it looks like I'll have 16 GB. 16 GB should be plenty then :) -

Currently I'm running windows 7 ultimate so I'm good there. The 32 GB of ram looks pricy so I guess I'll stick to 16GB.

And nikorr ... I've never had someone so helpful on the internet. You are an amazing person. Thank you so much for helping me!!!

When u match quality and performance parts, u don't have any config problems. Quality mobo is the center piece of the PC + great CPU + RAM + SSD = very fast PC already. Add fast GPU and u can do anything : )

Nikorr maybe you can help me.
I have installed everything you recommended but when I'm browsing the web (firefox, IE,) The screens turn black for 5 seconds and then turn back on with the message " display driver stopped responding and has recovered "
I tried to turn my voltage on the cpu to 1.35 and the memory to 1.6 (didn't help)
