The 5600 am2 is about all you can use. Those boards aren't designed to upgrade to a newer cpu. I recommend you sell your system intact and build your own when amd's bulldozer comes shortly. Some am3+ boards are already out.

fujitsu semens are pretty much hardware bound to the spec they are made with.
the biggest cpu a socket 940 can take if its just an am2 board is the 6400+ x2 but you may need a bios update and it will be up to fujitsu to issue that. if they havent then your pretty much stuck with what you have and the maximum your bios will support which may well be a 5600+x2 as suggested.

i know other boards in the am2 range will support phenom duals and quads but but not the later athlon 2's, they are limited by the HT speed and it will be hit and miss as to whether they (the phenoms) even work.

note* phenom not phenom 2

i get what you and o1die are saying i am barking up the wrong tree to get quad cores i need a new main bored because iam very limited to what i can do with this bored. only problem is money costs a bit to get a new main bored and psu plus cpus with new ram. prob just stay with what i have for the moment prob just upgrade my pc2-6400 400 mhz to a higher mhz to tune it up abit

The 6400 is probably 125 watts, which may not post or require a better heatsink. The 5600 will definately work and should run cool enough to keep your stock heatsink.

you also need a board that can handle 140watts if your gonna use a 6400. but the truth is they aint worth the money now. it would be cheaper to buy a new board cpu and maybe even ram as it would give a better power to price ratio.
you can buy an am3+ or h61 motherboard for around 50 pounds

2 boards around 50 pounds...

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-phenom-ii-x4-965-bla... 100 pounds

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004FA8NR8/ref=asc_df_B004FA... 136 pounds but is a stronger cpu

and ddr3 memory can be had for as little as 10 pounds per gig. cheaper if you buy 4gigs.

so for less than 200 pounds for and amd setup that would bring you midrange gaming and less than 230 for an intel setup that would be stronger but put you in the same area. it would be well worth the upgrade.
