Hi,
I have an Nvidia 7900gtx. it is currently running driver version 258.96. I wanted to update the drivers so I downloaded the newest ones from the Nvidia website. (260.99) the install failed :C. I then tried the 266.35 beta and the previous version, 260.89, both of which also failed to install.
Do I need to uninstall 258.96 first?
what else could be going wrong here?
thanks for the help.

Some people recommend uninstalling the old drivers before updates. Then again you do not need to update drivers for a card that old since all the updates in those drivers are for newer cards.

No it would not. The card matured many years ago.
