New HD for Dell Inspiron 8000

My Dell Inspiron 8000 still has its original 20GB hard drive, and I'm
feeling the need for more space. Do I need to partition and format the new
drive any differently than I would for a desktop? I've read about needing to
make a small special partition for sleep mode or something -- do I need to
do anything like that for the Inspiron 8000?
