Hey, I'm th1nker. This is my first post and I'm new to building computers. It took me days with my nub instincts (or lack thereof), but I finally threw a budget gaming build together with the help of a few friends - just wanted some opinions and further suggestions. If you guys have better suggestions, I welcome and encourage them, but my preferred sites are tiger direct and direct canada, and I'd like to stay within $1000 CAD. Thanks in advance!

TLDR: Prospective gaming build. Will it even work? If yes, opinions/suggestions? Needs to render 2nd coming of jesus on a budget.

As Skwisgaar would say: "here goes nuthins"

MOBO: ASUS P8P67-M Pro (Sandy Bridge) http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=10530BD0992] $143
CPU: i5 2500k http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=12200BD1527] $223
RAM: G.skill ripjaws 4GB http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=15380BD2304] $43

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD5870 http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5256799&sku=A271-5870] $260
PSU: OCZ ModXstream 600W http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=13220AC8686] $67
HD: WD Caviar Black 1TB http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=25350DR0783] $80
DVD: Samsung SH-S222A/BEBE http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=14040AC0054] $22

Total before taxes/rebates: $838CAD

Hello th1nker;

You did good.
All your missing is a CPU cooler, a case and an operating system.

Wow, that was all really helpful. I had no idea that the 6950 was only $10 more on this site. Good suggestion with the cooler as well. I'm assuming the stock one is garbage if it even comes with one. Regarding the case, I've already purchased it (I know, poor idea purchasing it before the other parts). One more thing, my bud said I need SATA cables for the HD and DVD bc they are "OEM".. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot for your quick reply. I appreciate the help :D

What case did you get?

SATA cables should be in the motherboard accessory pack.

Looks like there are SATA II and SATA III cables in the accessory pack.

Asus P8P67-M PRO webpage
Look under Specifications and Accessories: 2 x SATA 3.0Gb/s cables & 2 x SATA 6.0Gb/s cables

You'll be using a SATA III 6.0Gb/s on your SATA III WD Caviar Black HDD and a SATA II 3.0Gb/s cable on your DVD burner.

Here is a Step-by-Step Guide to Building a PC

Look over the forum's "System won't boot" checklist to see some of the common build errors and how to avoid them.

-> The usual advice; read the manual / install guide; look at the parts, read the manual again and if everything makes sense and looks right - then go ahead with the install.

While you're waiting you can download the online version of the motherboard manual and start getting familiar with it. Same for the other parts you want to order if they have install guides or manuals available.

Thanks for these links. They will definitely clear things up regarding the build process, which is another thing I was worried about. I'm going ahead with my order!

Nice case!
You won't have any problems with the tall CPU cooler.
