Hello,
I recently obtained a HP p6653w (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02479700&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_us/c02479700/loc:2&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=4313690&key=null&site=null) for a couple hundred bucks, new/never used, just the PC and a power cord. It is a WalMart HP box (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/allReviews.do?product_id=14978548).

I would like to hook it up to a large (55") LCD TV ( Samsung UN55C7000/LN52B750 or Sony KDL-55HX800). It will be in the family room for gaming, movies, Netflix and general internet surfing.

What video card should I get for the PCI Express x 16 slot for $125 and under? I was thinking GDD5 with 1 GB of memory but, what do I know.

Solution
im running it on dell inspiron 530s which comes with a 250w power supply right now and have been for the past 8 months. its actually slightly overclocked aswell. it only uses 42 watts maximum. ati/amd are just covering themselves from any legal issues. if you look at something like the gt240, you will see that nvidia recommends a minimum power supply of 300w. the gt240 uses 70 watts maximum, 28 watts more than the HD5570, yet it recommended minimum power supply is a 100 watts less. another example is the gts 450. this card uses 106 watts maximum but the minimum recommended power supply is 400w, the same as the HD5570.

Your system has only a 250W power supply. That makes it next to impossible for your to get a decent card on it.

What kind of gaming will you be doing? The integrated graphics is enough for netflix, movies, and internet surfing. So you'll only need a card for gaming, so if you only play older games you might be okay.

well the most you can put on a 250w power supply would probably be the HD5570. they cost around $75 but there are gddr 5 versions around which cost more. what i would recommend though, is buying a new power supply like this antec then buy a better graphics card.

antec basiq power 430w 80 plus certified power supply $44.95- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371023

if you want to stick to your current budget then go for the HD5670 for $80.

if you want to spend more, go for this HD5770 which is $100 after rebate.

infernox_01 I've seen that card recommended before for low power systems but I'm wondering how you can run it with only 250W? It its system specs it asks for 400W, what about it makes it so it can run on so much less than that?

Hi All;

Thank you so much for the recommendation.

Using the 250w limit my choices were limited. The HP forums kept harping on the 250w limitation. Since my investment was marginal in the box I will keep the original PSU. With teenage sons I am sure whatever I get will not be good enough for gaming somehow and upgrade the PSU down the road if needed. With the wife going nuts with the big screen TV and picking the box up on the cheap I figured it would be a good way to get the kids out in the family room and be semi-social.

Thank you again for your time and consideraqtion

what OS is this unit running.?
a 1GB card on a 32-bit OS isn't that optimal for RAM availability..
GT240 DDR5 512 version will do
the GT430 is a DDR3 card.
the GT240 will run on that 250-watt supply
ATi option could be the HD5570, I agree with infernox_01 thus far.

It is Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I just have what came out of the box, less KVM, discs and any paperwork. Powered it up (to make sure I did not get snookered), configured W7 and that is it so far.
